Why Ultralight

What makes it bend

The felt isn’t just backing, it’s the structure: it lets the panel curve, keeps it light and holds the slat rhythm.

Bends to the curve

Bends to the curve

No MDF, no rigid core. It follows curved walls, columns and coves with no kerfing or relief cuts.

Grooves cut, not glued

Grooves cut, not glued

Every groove is CNC-cut into the felt backing, so the spacing stays even across the whole wall.

Vutha & Paula
Vutha & PaulaWe’ll reply when we’re back

Still stuck? Ask us anything about your wall. We’re real people in Garden Grove, CA, not a bot.

Sizing & boxesHow many boxes of Ultralight do I need?

Measure the width of your wall in inches and divide by 59 — each box covers 59.00″ of wall width. Round up, because the offcut from the last panel usually finds a use elsewhere on the wall.

A ten-foot wall (120″) takes three boxes. A sixteen-foot wall (192″) takes four. If you are unsure, send us your measurements and we will work it out with you.

Sizing & boxesHow wide is one Ultralight panel?

Each Ultralight panel is 11.80″ wide — 300mm. That is seven slat faces at 1.20″ each, separated by v-grooves of 0.49″.

Because each end of the panel carries half a groove, the panel covers the full 11.80″ once installed. There is no lap or overlap to subtract.

Sizing & boxesWhat sizes do Ultralight panels come in?

Three heights for the standard slat: 94.49″ for eight-foot walls, 106″ for nine-foot walls and 118.11″ for ten-foot walls. All three are 11.80″ wide per panel, five panels to a box.

There is also a 47″ tile size sold separately for smaller areas and feature bands.

Sizing & boxesHow many panels are in a box of Ultralight?

Five panels. Each panel is 11.80″ wide, so a box covers 59.00″ of wall width — the widest coverage per box Slats.co sells.

By height that works out to 38.71 sq ft at 94.49″, 43.43 sq ft at 106″ and 48.39 sq ft at 118.11″.

Sizing & boxesHow much does a box of Ultralight panels weigh?

A box of five Ultralight panels weighs about 20 lbs at 94.49″, 25 lbs at 106″ and 29 lbs at 118.11″, packaging included.

That is light enough to carry up a flight of stairs and to hold a panel flat against the wall while you fix it, without a second pair of hands.

Sizing & boxesHow thick are Ultralight panels?

Ultralight panels are 9mm thick in total — about 0.35 of an inch. That is the veneer face and the acoustic felt together, because there is no core between them.

It is the shallowest panel Slats.co sells, which makes it workable on ceilings, in door reveals and anywhere a deeper panel would read as bulk rather than texture.

Sizing & boxesHow many slats does an Ultralight panel have?

Seven slat faces per panel, with six full v-grooves between them and half a groove at each end.

Each slat face measures 1.20″ across and each groove 0.49″, so the slat rhythm repeats every 1.69″ along the wall.

InstallCan Ultralight panels bend around a curved wall?

Yes. Because there is no rigid core, an Ultralight panel follows a gentle curve as it comes — no kerfing, no steaming and no relief cuts.

It works on curved walls, columns, coves, bulkheads and the sweep of a stairwell. Fix from one end and let the panel take the shape of the wall rather than trying to flatten it first.

InstallHow do Ultralight panels join together?

They butt straight into each other. Each end of an Ultralight panel carries half a v-groove, so when two panels meet the two halves close into one full groove identical to the six inside a panel.

There is no lip, no overlap and nothing to align. Push the next panel up against the last one and the seam disappears into the rhythm of the grooves.

InstallHow do you install Ultralight panels?

Ultralight panels fix to the wall with screws or construction adhesive. Screws go through the felt in a groove rather than through a slat face, so the head sits down in the shadow line instead of on the wood.

Start from one end, check the first panel is plumb, then butt each following panel up against the last. Most walls are a one-person job at this weight.

InstallDo Ultralight panels need a batten or frame behind them?

No. Ultralight fixes straight to the wall surface — drywall, plaster or timber — with screws or construction adhesive. No battens, no furring strips and no subframe.

That is part of why the panel only takes 9mm off the room. On a curved or uneven surface, fixing straight to the wall also lets the panel follow the shape rather than bridging it.

InstallCan Ultralight panels be installed on a ceiling?

Yes. At 9mm thick and about 20 lbs a box, Ultralight is the easiest Slats.co panel to take overhead.

Use construction adhesive together with screws on a ceiling rather than adhesive alone, and support each panel while the adhesive takes. Work along one line so the grooves stay continuous across the span.

InstallCan Ultralight panels be cut to size?

Yes. Cut the veneer face with a fine-tooth blade and the felt with a sharp knife.

Wherever you can, cut along a groove — the join then reads as another groove instead of a cut edge. For height, cut from the bottom so the factory edge stays at eye level.

InstallHow do I cut Ultralight around outlets and light switches?

Mark the opening on the face of the panel, then cut the veneer with a sharp knife or a fine-tooth blade and peel the felt back behind it.

Because the felt is only 9mm and has no rigid core, it cuts cleanly without chipping or blowing out the back. A cover plate sits over the edge and hides the cut.

InstallCan I mount a TV or shelves on Ultralight panels?

Yes, but fix into the wall behind, never into the panel. Ultralight is veneer on felt with no rigid core, so it carries no structural load at all.

Locate your studs before you panel, mark them, then run your bracket fixings through the panel and into the stud. Bring the bracket bolts through a groove where you can.

MaterialsWhat is an Ultralight acoustic slat panel?

Ultralight is a flexible acoustic wood slat wall panel. Real wood veneer is laminated straight onto 9mm recycled acoustic felt, and v-grooves are cut through the felt between each slat face to create the slat rhythm. There is no MDF, no hardwood backer and no rigid core of any kind, which is what makes it the lightest and most flexible panel Slats.co makes.

Each panel is 11.80″ wide and carries seven slat faces. Five panels come in a box and cover 59″ of wall width.

MaterialsDo Ultralight panels have an MDF core?

No. Ultralight has no MDF, no particle board, no plywood and no hardwood backer — there is no core at all. The wood veneer is laminated directly onto 9mm recycled acoustic felt.

That is the reason the panel is light enough to handle alone and flexible enough to follow a curve. Slats.co panels with a hardwood core, such as TrueWood and the Solid line, are built differently and suit different jobs.

MaterialsIs Ultralight real wood?

Yes. The face is real wood veneer, not a printed film or a photographic laminate.

Because it is real wood, the grain varies from panel to panel and from batch to batch. That is worth knowing if you are matching an order placed months apart — order the whole wall together where you can.

MaterialsWhat finishes do Ultralight panels come in?

Ten, across oak, walnut and maple, each paired with a felt colour: White Oak with black, grey or oatmeal felt; Walnut with black, grey or brown felt; Grey Oak, Black Oak and Dark Smoke Oak with black felt; and Maple with beige felt.

Felt colour matters more than it sounds — it is the colour you see in every groove, so it sets how much contrast the slat rhythm carries.

MaterialsDo Ultralight panels absorb sound?

The 9mm recycled felt backing softens echo and reverb in a room, and the v-grooves expose more felt surface to work with. In practice people notice a room sounding warmer and less live, particularly in spaces with hard floors and bare walls.

Slats.co does not publish an NRC rating for Ultralight, so we will not quote one. If your project needs a certified acoustic figure, tell us and we will point you at what we can and cannot document.

MaterialsAre Ultralight panels fire-rated?

Our panels are not fire rated. If a fire rating is required for your project, check with your contractor or your local building code before ordering.

MaterialsCan Ultralight panels be painted or stained?

We do not recommend it. The face is a thin real wood veneer, and stain lifts unevenly while paint fills the grooves and flattens the slat rhythm that the panel is there for.

If you want a painted finish, the Paint-Ready Fluted line is made for exactly that — it ships pre-primed white and is designed to be painted in your own colour.

MaterialsWill Ultralight panels expand or contract?

No meaningful movement. There is no solid timber and no MDF in the panel, so there is nothing to swell or shrink with humidity the way a cored panel can.

You do not need expansion gaps at the seams. Butt the panels tight and they stay tight.

MaterialsAre Ultralight panels eco-friendly?

The 9mm felt backing is recycled acoustic felt. The panels are independently tested to meet low-VOC standards.

Slats.co also plants a tree for every panel sold. And because Ultralight uses veneer rather than solid timber, a given log covers far more wall.

Shipping & careHow much does shipping cost on Ultralight panels?

Shipping is free to the contiguous U.S. on most Ultralight orders. The exceptions are samples, and 118.11″ panels ordered in quantities of 1 to 3 boxes, where shipping is calculated at checkout.

Order 4 or more boxes of 118.11″ panels and shipping is free. The 118.11″ boxes are long enough to move by freight rather than parcel, which is why the carrier rate shows up on smaller orders.

Shipping & careHow long do Ultralight panels take to arrive?

Most Ultralight orders leave the warehouse within one to two business days, with delivery to the contiguous U.S. typically inside a week.

Freight shipments of 118.11″ panels take longer and are booked with a delivery appointment. The delivery estimate on the product page reflects the current lead time for the size and finish you are looking at.

Shipping & careCan Ultralight panels be used in a bathroom or outdoors?

Ultralight is for indoor use only. It is not suitable for outdoors, saunas, or bathrooms with a shower or bath in the same room.

A powder room with good ventilation and no shower is usually fine. Wood veneer and felt both take on moisture, and neither recovers well once they have.

Shipping & careHow do I clean Ultralight panels?

Dust the veneer with a dry or barely damp cloth, following the grain. Vacuum the felt in the grooves on a low setting with a soft brush head.

No solvents, no wax, no polish and no steam. If something is spilled on the felt, blot it up rather than wiping across.

Shipping & careCan I take Ultralight panels with me if I move?

Yes, if they were fixed with screws. Back the screws out, lift the panels down and patch the holes — they sit in the grooves, so they are small and easy to fill.

Panels fixed with construction adhesive are not intended to come off cleanly. If you are renting or expect to move, use screws.

Shipping & careAre Ultralight panels renter-friendly?

They are the most renter-friendly panel Slats.co makes. They are light enough to handle alone, they fix with screws rather than anything permanent, and they come down and travel with you.

Check your tenancy agreement on wall fixings first. Screw holes land in the grooves, so patching is a small job.

Shipping & careDoes Slats.co offer Ultralight samples?

Yes. Individual Ultralight samples are $3.99 each, and the full sample kit is $30.

Worth doing. Veneer colour and felt colour both shift under different light, and a sample on your own wall answers that in a way a screen cannot.

Shipping & careWhere is Slats.co based?

Slats.co is a Southern California company, shipping across the contiguous United States.

I love the wood tone variation of True Smoke

I love the wood tones variation of the Dark Smoke as it looks more like real walnut. The sample seems like the Truewood Lite offers enough dimension without being bulky looking and heavy. I will order as soon as it is in stock.

Great Color Match For Cherrywood Cabinets

We plan to install these on a ceiling. Cherrywood is not an easy color to match, but these look great. Very light material should also reduce the installers efforts.

Wood color not a match

There is nothing wrong with the color. We were simply looking for something a bit browner. We were hoping this product would work because the flexibility and weight work well for our need.
